AEN & numeracy

Stronger foundations: Numicon, numeracy literacy (simplify / solve), and jigsaws with clearer wording. UDL settings remain under Access.

Tracks

Foundation

Counting & Numicon

Count, match, build numbers with manipulatives.

Foundation

Everyday operations

Add / take away stories with visuals and sentence frames.

Core

Numeracy literacy

Decode exam words: simplify, solve, estimate, show your working.

Core

Money & time

Euro, change, timetables — real-life tasks.

Core

Jigsaw numeracy

Muddy solutions → ordered steps with simplified wording.

Numeracy literacy glossary

  • simplify ? Make neater / shorter. Expand brackets and collect like terms. You are not finding x yet.
  • solve ? Find the unknown (often x). Do the same to both sides. Check your answer.
  • evaluate ? Work out the value by substituting numbers.
  • estimate ? A sensible rough answer before calculating exactly.
  • expand ? Remove brackets by multiplying.
  • factorise ? Put brackets back by finding a common factor.
  • show your working ? Write each step so a teacher can follow your thinking.
  • hence ? Use the result you just found to do the next part.

Numicon & manipulatives

Number rods & shapes

Match Numicon shapes to numbers 1–10; build bonds to 10.

Resource

Place value trays

Use tens and ones plates to show 2-digit numbers.

Resource

Addition bridges

Combine shapes; say the number sentence aloud (EAL-friendly).

Subtraction stories

Start with a shape, remove parts; write “start − change = result”.
