Numeracy literacy glossary
- simplify ? Make neater / shorter. Expand brackets and collect like terms. You are not finding x yet.
- solve ? Find the unknown (often x). Do the same to both sides. Check your answer.
- evaluate ? Work out the value by substituting numbers.
- estimate ? A sensible rough answer before calculating exactly.
- expand ? Remove brackets by multiplying.
- factorise ? Put brackets back by finding a common factor.
- show your working ? Write each step so a teacher can follow your thinking.
- hence ? Use the result you just found to do the next part.

Addition bridges
Combine shapes; say the number sentence aloud (EAL-friendly).
Subtraction stories
Start with a shape, remove parts; write “start − change = result”.
